| The undisputed "First Lady Of Country Music," during the late 1960's and early 1970's, she dominated the country charts, scoring 17 number one hits in the process. Her 1967 recording of "Stand By Your Man" remains a career defining moment. After a series of stormy marriages, including a career highpoint and personal lowpoint one to George "Possum" Jones, she had settled into a third marriage with George Richey. By The early 1980's, her career began to slow down. Although she still had hit singles, she didn't reach the Top Ten as easily as she did in the previous decade. Wynette also began suffering a variety of health problems, including inflammations of her bile duct and subsequent addictions to pain killers. By the 1990's she was viewed as a respected star and a popular concert attraction. Her career kicked into a new highpoint. Her work in the later part of her life included a stint on the soap opera "Capitol," a scene stealing turn as Hank Hill's mother on "King Of The Hill," a successful CD of duets with some of the music industrys giants like Smokey Robinson, Elton John and Sting. A revitalized country music chart appearance via her "Honky Tonk Angels" disc with Dolly and Loretta. An appearance on the Chipmunk's album "Friends In Low Places" and of course her disco/video smash in 1991 with The KLF on "Justified And Ancient." Sadly we lost Tammy on April 6, 1998. |
