Margaret
Reynolds
Like so many of the artists featured on this website, little is known about Ms. Reynolds. As often is the case viewers will write in to fill in the blanks or the artist themselves stumble upon the site and share their bios with us. Hopefully this will be the case with Margaret.
From what I can piece together it seems Margaret was a background singer for K.C. and his Sunshine Band in the mid-1970's. So too was Beverly Champion. This would explain Margaret's eventual recordings on Sunshine Sound with Beverly and K.C. as producers.
Margaret's first disco hit was the double-sided 1979 12" single of
"Keep On Holdin' On" and "All Day, All Night." The songs were not the smashes that were predicted. Still Henry Stone commisioned a full album of material. The songs became regional hits in certain areas of the country. For instance in San Francisco they became classics while in Chicago I never recalled hearing them played.
     A second 12" single appeared in 1980, a duet with K.C. of
"Take Me To The Moon." This song did little in the way of chart or sales action. Perhaps her timing was the problem? The bottom was about to fall out of the disco industry and it seems she began releasing records during a glutinous period.
Like most people Margaret came to my attention two years later when the up & coming label Moby Dick Records released her product. Moby Dick records, a San Francisco label, started remixing and re-releasing gay disco classics to help fund their new artists. Bill Motley (Boystown Gang producer) took Maragret's tracks into the studio and whipped out two stunning remixes. The first 12" single was
"Day After Day" backed with the original mix of "One Into One." The second 12" singles was an overhauled version of "Keep On Holdin' On."
Suddenly Margaret was enjoying the chart success that had eluded her a few years prior. The success brought about the releasing of her album on Moby Dick to critical acclaim. But before Margaret could reap the benefits of her new found success Moby Dick closed it's doors.
Margaret would have one more moment in the spotlight. In 1985, Margaret a Florida resident, teamed up with Joe Gibbs (an Opa-Locka resident) to create one more masterpiece. The Dubwise 12" single of
"Three Steps From True Love" was billed as Margaret Reynolds and Girlfriends. The Girlfriends were K.C.'s other two backing vocalists Beverly Champion and Jeanette Williams. I remember playing the song in heavy rotation and it being a floor-favorite but because of possible distribution problems it was hard for many to purchase. Still Margaret's strong, earthy vocals make it one of my all-time favorites.
Since then it has been 20 years and I have seen no sight of Ms. Reynolds. She possible returned to backing vocals for other artists or maybe left the business altogether? Still, we enjoy the small legacy she has given us and hope that wherever she is that she is happy and healthy. If you have any additional information on Margaret please contact us so that we may honor her properly.
