Liza Minnelli
"Art imitates life" and sometimes life imitates life. The well documented rise-fall-rise-end of her mom, Judy Garland, seems to mirror Liza's own in many ways. Judy had drug/alcohol problems-Liza's an alumni of the Betty Ford Clinic. Judy married homosexuals (Liza's own papa) and was an icon to gay men-Liza married Peter Allen, and then there's David Gest (what the hell is THAT about?). And her status in the gay community seems to have picked up where Mama's left off. Liza inherited Judy's voice and talent, and most of her looks. With all that it was a given that Liza delve into "disco music" especially given her fondness of "54" and Steve Rubell. In 1977 she approached it with "Tropical Nights." The title track and "Jimi Jimi" were both very disco and yet Columbia failed to remix them and put them on a 12" single, which would have probably saved the album. Oddly enough Liza spent more time at the disco's between 1977 and 1980 than recording anything to dance to. But that was all forgiven in 1989 when she joined the producers du jour....the Pet Shop Boys.  The "Results" was a stunning album packed with dance treats like "Twist In My Sobriety," Rent," Losing My Mind," "Don't Drop Bombs" and her take on "Love Pains." Through all her ups and downs Liza still remains one of the last of the great stars from a dying era......who knows she may hit the dance charts again!
