Bob McGilpin's first release was 1978's "Superstar." The album was released promotionally on colored (grey) vinyl, as were all Butterfly Records albums. The title track was the only 12" single released from the album and it became a Top Ten hit for him. The song, "Superstar" was so popular that it was remixed and re-released a second time during it's peak. His second album was 1979's "Get Up." Presumably also on colored vinyl, and once again one 12" single was released. The A-side was "Sexy Thing" but the hit, at least here in Chicago, was the B-side "Get Loose." Following the success of those two 12" singles he made a move, following the demise of Butterfly Records, to Casablanca Records in 1980. He had one release the self -titled "Bob McGilpin." Once again only one 12" was released. "Down To The Wire" backed with "Chain Reaction" created little excitement and Bob seems to have become one of the early 'disco casualties' as the new decade emerged. The last known sighting/appearance of Bob was on March 5, 1998. He was part of the entertainment at "Higher Ground" in Hollywood on their "Western Beat" night.
I believe the strength of his first two 12" singles alone garner him a spot in "The DiscoMuseum."
EDITOR'S NOTE: I have exchanged several e-mails with Bob. He is alive and well and living in Nashville, Tennessee. He is involved in writing and producing for others. He has promised to give us an update as to his career since the disco era but has yet to get back to us.
